Description

Mother to five children, Clover Stroud has navigated family life across two decades, both losing and finding herself. The only thing I didn’t like, and which seems to be a trend in books I’ve read recently, is her references to drug taking in the past and intimate details of her relationships. The best evocation of the all-consuming, self-eroding reality of motherhood, while also being luminous with love. Although I’m over that now, I am wondering if, at the age of 49, I still have time to have another 3 children.

It is a highly personal and brave book, a look right inside their life and what it is really like to be a mother of a big family. For more details, please consult the latest information provided by Royal Mail's International Incident Bulletin. It’s not about duty, or even about juggling the demands of kids and work; mothering for Stroud has more to do with hedonism and adventure, about escape, and exploring the outer limits of human experience. Clover describes the bliss of being a new mother and the complete immersion you have whilst parenting young children through to navigating the way your relationship changes once your children grow through their teen years, ready to leave the nest. Hodně mě ovlivňuje skutečnost, že u audioknihy čekám trochu procítěný přednes, a ne monotónní, skoro až strojové čtení bez špetky emocí, zvlášť když se jedná o takhle emotivní knihu.

The only reason why I did not finish this in one sitting was due to the fact that I was being the very mother that seeps from the pages of this book. As a mum of six I’m deeply grateful to read Clover’s book, putting into words the vast roller coaster of emotions that mothering can bring. Clover Stroud brought back so many memories, the good ones, and the bad ones, the happiness and joy as well as the fear and guilt you feel as a mother. But the imperative of obliterating her own inner pain is more urgent to her than the imperative of giving time and attention to the children she already has. The book is not always pretty, and sometimes its directness is shocking, but it is full of love and honesty.

So much spoke to my heart, it made me laugh out loud nod and agree out loud and possibly cry a little, quietly and with a mixture of joy and sadness. However, as I started in on reading the book I was almost immediately taken in by Stroud's ability to describe everything so viscerally. For Stroud, there is no question of an epidural: labour is and needs to be an extreme experience, which takes her to the brink of life and death, and “feels to me like the very reason I was put on this planet”. I started reading slower as I got towards the end, as I just didn’t want to leave the company of this family.Photograph: Chris Floyd/The Guardian View image in fullscreen A painful, wonderful world … Clover Stroud and family at home. This book was exquisitely tender whilst also being brutally honest about the challenges that loving small beings so fiercely, brings to your life.
