To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Told through magical diary entries that reveal only the truth, it's the Norse gods as you've never seen them: hilarious, immature--and prepubescent. There is a fair amount of toilet humour, this time in the form of hamster poo and that is sure to win a lot of children's hearts. Stowell balances humor with emotional depth, without ever falling into the expositional trope of people simply sitting and talking about their feelings.

When Heimdall and Hyrrokkin abandon their "children" to go on holiday, Odin sends Baldur – Thor's half brother and god of making Loki look bad – to babysit. Loki is, as ever, just trying to be good, but when a cursed item reaches his possession, can he resist wanting to be king of the world? A ring that looks suspiciously like the cursed ring of Andvari, one that promises Loki the world if only he gives in to his deepest, darkest desires. I often worry he's going to 'age out' he already is disappointed that I have gone from knowing 'everything about star wars and hanging with Max Rebo' to not having seen the latest Mandalorian. However I got him this in paperback just last week and he is still gripped with the spikey haired norseman. She can be pretty picky in her taste in books so when she gets a book she devours like that we know it's a good one. Wry, witty and very funny diary-style story packed with doodles and comic strips about the frustration trickster god Lok. Loki might not have shown any moral improvement (yet) but Odin has given him another chance to prove himself worthy of A. In each book, Loki must face the challenges of any ordinary 11-year-old, and the results are knee-slappingly, tear-inducingly hilarious! I remember this age when I wanted comics read to me at bedtime but my dad always insisted on reading something more grown up.

The Loki series is a real favourite of mine and one I am constantly recommended to children and families as they are accessible to even the most reluctant of readers.
