Description

This makes the book far more accessible than one might expect from a Harvard professor - think of Paul Horowitz as the Richard Feynman of electronics.

In the first paragraph of the book’s preface, the authors give the basic picture: the “x” is for eXtra, meaning that the material in this book was originally slated to be part of the AoE3, but simply didn’t fit — that book is 1250 pages as it stands. Learning the Art of Electronics: A Hands-On Lab Course - (formerly Student Manual for The Art of Electronics) by Thomas C. The 2001 pressing of the second edition ( ISBN 0521370957) lists "Reprinted 1990 (twice), 1991, 1993, 1994 (twice), 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 (twice), 1999, 2001". There are also application circuits for measuring MOSFET gate charge and FET transconductance, with tabulated results for a variety of types. Here, you’ll find a discussion of simple diode- and MOSFET-based reverse battery protection circuits, lithium-ion battery circuit safety, implementing foldback current limiting, controlling DC motors with PWM, high-side current sensing, and various other topics in power electronics design. For a great beginner’s book, it’s hard to go wrong with Forrest Mims’ “Getting Started in Electronics”. The only reservation is that the sheer size and weight means this is a document you read on a desk, workbench or table and not on your lap.

This book favors an intuitive understanding over the endless math found in electrical engineering textbooks. The Art of Electronics: The x-Chapters expands on topics introduced in the best-selling third edition of The Art of Electronics, completing the broad discussions begun in the latter. Go for an easier one to start with, such as Practical Electronics for Inventors, book 4, and Learning the Art of Electronics then drift into this superb volume. I suspect that just as importantly though, the time needed to publish these chapters would have allowed the rest of the information updated in AoE3 to stagnate for 4 years. This is the thoroughly revised and updated second edition of the hugely successful The Art of Electronics. Usually publishers’ contracts with book distributors only allow one edition to be sold in a given territory. It makes one aware of how to do design, for example, a common emitter amplifier, as if it's a piece of cake. After 7 years of learning electronics at Harvard he founded Sea Data Corporation, where he spent 16 years designing instruments for Physical Oceanography.

If you don't, you can probably still pick things up through osmosis, and you'd probably get the most out of it on your second pass through. I studied Electronics at University and worked for several years in design before moving to computer systems. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I have found it very helpful, and look forward to the day that I will have enough liquidity to afford a copy of “AoE” to see the comparison. It's an alternative way to penetrate into the engineering mindset and understand, as the title say, "The Art of Electronics", which is a lot more than just mathematics, it's a particular way of thinking, which this book teaches masterfully. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the first edition so successful and popular. If you want to know all the authors have to say about the 2N3904 transistor, for instance, the index will point you to the twenty-two places in the book that it’s mentioned.
